Ask Dr. MacKenzie: Children can get adjusted too?!

In honor of #LeadFamilyWeek I have decided to address a question regarding family chiropractic visits. We have had a number of families in and out of our clinic in the last few months, which has opened up the door to questions regarding babies and toddlers getting adjusted. The truth is, children can experience problems with neuromusculoskeletal functioning the same way adults can!

At Lead Integrated Health Therapies we have seen patients as young as one day old. As with adult patients, infants will go through an initial assessment involving a detailed history (discussed with the guardian present) and a physical examination. Once a diagnosis is reached, it has been determined that there are no contraindications to chiropractic care, and the guardian has consented to treatment, the child will receive their adjustments.

Adjustments performed on children often look a lot different than what they do on adults. Depending on the size of the child, and the issue the child presents with, we may use techniques such as Activator methods, diversified adjustments, and extremely light pressure mobilizations on the spine. In most instances, you will not hear an audible ‘pop’ when babies and infants are adjusted.

With February break in full swing, school aged children normally find it much easier to stay active. Once classes begin again, it is extremely important to stay active and maintain healthy postures in classrooms to minimize the risk of developing neuromusculoskeletal injuries or conditions.

Chiropractic care is a safe and effective form of care for patients of all ages. If you enjoy your regular chiropractic visits, don’t do your children the disservice of waiting until they are injured to benefit from the chiropractic adjustment! If you would like more information on your children receiving adjustments, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

Yours in health,

Dr. MacKenzie
