It’s that time of the year. The holiday season is fast approaching. Family and friends come to visit, there are parties to attend, shopping and baking to do, and then finally Christmas Day arrives with presents, visiting, and a big festive dinner.
But, in the midst of all the busy-ness of the season, we can go into overdrive. We start to juggle everyone else’s needs, wanting to do everything perfectly, putting our ‘to do’ lists first, and we begin to neglect our own health and wellness. During the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ we can end up feeling exhausted, anxious and even, at times, depressed.
Back in 2013, just as the holiday season was beginning, after years of cyclical anxiety and depression, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. At the time it seemed like it was the end of the world.
That same year, my husband bought me a Beginner Mat package at Lead for my Christmas present. As I was not feeling well mentally or physically at the time, I decided it would be good to take some ‘exercise’ classes. I didn’t know it at the time, but starting classes at Lead was going to change my life.
“The acquirement and enjoyment of physical well-being, mental calm and spiritual peace are priceless to their possessors…”
– Joseph Pilates
I began my Pilates classes and as the weeks went by I started to feel better physically. Then another wonderful thing happened: I started to feel calmer, happier, and more grounded. A year and a half later Block Therapy came into my life. Without a doubt, attending classes at Lead truly gave me the ‘priceless’ gifts of physical, mental, and spiritual health and wellness.
During this Christmas season, be sure to take time for yourself. Attend a class, do something you love, put yourself first on your ‘to do’ list. The movement of Pilates, and the release and relaxation of Block Therapy, are important tools for the health and wellness of our body, mind and spirit. Fill your cup first so that you can do all the things you want to and fully enjoy everything this season has to offer!
