A Doula to Support You

A doula is a non-medical person who assists a woman before, during, or after childbirth, to provide emotional support and physical help if needed, and she may also provide support to the mother’s partner and family. Unlike a midwife, doulas are not medical professionals and therefore cannot administer medication. While doulas can’t guarantee any particular outcomes, there is evidence that women who have doulas at birth or immediate postpartum have a greater satisfaction with their experience. There are labor doulas who support women during labor and delivery and postpartum doulas who support women after the birth of their baby as they adjust to the major transformation that is becoming a mother.

Labor Doula

A labor doula helps you plan and prepare to have the most desirable birth experience possible. This is achieved by providing physical, mental, and emotional education during pregnancy as well as support throughout labor and birth.

Research has shown that moms who include a doula as part of their birth team have a reduced risk of needing a medical induction, interventions during labor and birth, or needing a caesarean section. Research has also found that moms who have a doula experience a shorter labor and also have a more satisfying birth experience.
